What we do

Energy advisory services for homes and buildings

Whether you're renovating an existing home, building new to a high-performance standard, or managing a multi-unit building, every engagement starts with accurate data and ends with a report you can actually act on.

Existing Home Evaluations

An official EnerGuide evaluation is the starting point for almost every home energy improvement in Canada — and the required step to qualify for the Canada Greener Homes and Edmonton HERA rebate programs. We assess your home as it stands today, build a full energy model, and hand you a prioritized list of what to fix first.

  • Pre-retrofit evaluation with EnerGuide label and homeowner information sheet
  • Full house energy model built from measured, on-site data
  • Renovation upgrade report ranking improvements by impact
  • Post-retrofit evaluation to confirm results and release rebate payments
  • File submission to Natural Resources Canada handled for you

Best for: homeowners planning insulation, window, furnace or heat pump work, or anyone who wants to know where their energy dollars are going.

New Construction & Net Zero

High-performance homes need to be designed with the numbers in hand and proven once they're built. We model new builds at the design stage so builders can compare assemblies and mechanical options before committing, then verify the finished home against the label it's aiming for.

  • Design-stage energy modelling and assembly comparisons
  • EnerGuide labelling for new homes
  • ENERGY STAR for New Homes certification support
  • R-2000 and Net Zero / Net Zero Ready qualification
  • Third-party verification and as-built confirmation

Best for: custom and production builders differentiating their homes, and homeowners building to a performance target.

Multi-Unit Residential (MURB)

Multi-unit buildings have their own modelling rules, their own rebate pathways, and their own financing incentives. We assess and model MURB projects for developers and owners — including the energy performance documentation that supports a CMHC MLI Select application, where better efficiency translates directly into better loan terms.

  • Whole-building energy assessment and modelling
  • Documentation supporting CMHC MLI Select applications
  • Performance comparisons across design options
  • Coordination with design teams and consultants

Best for: developers, building owners and property managers of multi-unit residential buildings.

Airtightness & Blower Door Testing

Air leakage is the invisible line item on every utility bill. A blower door test depressurizes the home and measures exactly how much air moves through the envelope, turning a vague draft complaint into a number you can track and improve.

  • Calibrated blower door test with air changes per hour (ACH) result
  • Guided leak hunt with the home depressurized — you feel it for yourself
  • Verification against a target rating or program threshold
  • Before-and-after testing to prove the value of air sealing work

Best for: drafty homes, air-sealing projects, and any build that needs a verified airtightness number.

Quality Assurance

Ratings only mean something if they're right. Drawing on years of QA-specialist experience across both house and MURB files, we provide independent review of energy files and field work — catching modelling errors and documentation gaps before they become audit findings.

  • Independent review of house and MURB energy files
  • Field work review and verification
  • Audit-readiness checks against program requirements
  • Feedback and coaching for advisors and service organizations

Best for: service organizations, energy advisors and firms that need a second set of expert eyes.

Grant & Rebate Guidance

Rebate programs change their rules, amounts and deadlines regularly, and the paperwork is where most homeowners lose money. We keep track so you don't have to — which upgrades actually pay back, which programs stack, and what has to happen in which order to stay eligible.

  • Program eligibility review for your specific project
  • Sequencing advice so you don't disqualify yourself by accident
  • Help assembling and submitting required documentation
  • Straight answers about which upgrades are worth it — and which aren't

Best for: anyone planning upgrades who wants to claim every dollar they're entitled to. See current programs →

Common questions

Before you book

Do I need an evaluation before I start renovations?

For rebate programs, yes — a pre-retrofit evaluation has to happen before the upgrade work begins. If you've already started, contact us anyway and we'll tell you honestly what's still available to you.

How long does the on-site visit take?

Most single-family homes take two to three hours, depending on size, layout and how accessible the mechanical room and attic hatch are. Larger or more complex homes take longer.

What do I need to do to prepare?

Clear access to your attic hatch, mechanical room and electrical panel, and let us know about any wood-burning appliances. There's a full prep checklist on the process page.

Are you independent of contractors?

Yes. Scheelar Energy provides independent, third-party ratings. We don't sell upgrades or take referral fees from contractors, so the recommendations you get reflect your home — not someone's sales target.

Do you work outside Edmonton?

Our regular service area covers Edmonton, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Leduc, Fort Saskatchewan, Beaumont and Devon. Projects further afield are available by special request — just ask.

Not sure which service you need?

Tell us about your home or project and we'll point you to the right starting place — no obligation.
